No one I’ve spoken to, in all the years I’ve been writing, even when I was writing Naomily — I’ve never met a lesbian who said, “You know, I’ve never, ever considered sleeping with a man. I’ve never slept with a man. I’d never consider doing that.”
I just really believe that characters in television dramas should do things they’re not supposed to do, rather than what they are supposed to do. Because people doing things they are supposed to do is quite a bit boring. But that always causes a conflict when there is a view about how people are supposed to behave, or a view of how people do behave, things like that. Storytelling and drama just get in a crash at that point. I’ve been thinking about this, and wondering why I didn’t think about it more. But I probably would have done the same thing, I think.
