Verónica Cortés, La Reina del Sur
Verónica Cortés (Sara Maldonado)
Spanish-language telenovela La Reina del Sur, produced by the American television network Telemundo, followed the rise of Teresa Mendoza, a young woman from Mexico who becomes the most powerful drug trafficker in southern Spain. Verónica Cortés was a DEA agent brought in to pose as a love interest for Teresa’s friend Patty in order to get closer to the drug operation.
Patty began a downward spiral after she was dumped by Verónica. Stalking Verónica in an attempt to get her back, Patty learned the truth about her ex-girlfriend: that she worked for the police and had been using Patty to take down Teresa. Distraught, Patty drove the car off of a cliff, almost killing Verónica. On awakening in the hospital, she told Teresa everything she knows, then committed suicide.
