Nova Bordelon, Queen Sugar
Nova Bordelon (Rutina Wesley)
On the cable drama Queen Sugar, Nova Bordelon partnered with her 2 siblings to run the sugarcane farm they grew up on, after their father passed. The series opened with Nova in bed with Calvin, a married man. Nova’s interest in women was revealed in the 5th episode of the series when her family was (jokingly) grilling her about who she was secretly dating and her sister asked if it was a girl or a boy. Her Aunt joked that she thought that was a college phase, and Nova quickly corrected her that it was not. The secret relationship with Calvin, a cop, ended when she wrote an article criticizing the police department’s treatment of the black community.
As a journalist and activist, Nova met Chantal Williams, a Black Lives Matter activist, when both took part in a radio interview related to the movement. Chantal hit on Nova just after their encounter, they met again in the following episode, and began dating, although their interactions on screen were limited to brief scenes.
The relationship ended when they could not agree on their approach to BLM, and Chantal took issue with Nova’s ex being a white cop on the racist police force they were fighting against. They broke up, agreeing they were too different for their relationship to continue.
In 1×12 “Far Too Long”, Calvin used his connections within the police department to have the charges against Too Sweet – a wrongfully incarcerated black teen that Nova had been advocating for – dropped, and told Nova he left his wife to be with her. Nova and Calvin went out for drinks in the final episode of Season 1, and ran into a fellow cop friend of Calvin’s who disapproved of their relationship. After fighting with Calvin, the cop spat in Nova’s face on the way out. Once home, Nova was left alone to consider the future of her relationship with Calvin.
