Naomi Campbell, Skins UK
Naomi Campbell (Lily Loveless)
Naomi Campbell was a main character in Seasons 3 and 4. She was an individualist, passionate, political and principled. Throughout the series, Naomi’s sexual orientation was left ambiguous; after firmly maintaining she is straight, she later confessed to Effy and Emily, on separate occasions, that she was unsure. Additionally, she had shown an interest in male character Cook, and nearly had sex with him in her featured episode, however, she aborted the encounter due to her feelings for Emily. In the last episode of Series 4, Naomi revealed that she had fallen in love with Emily when they were younger, but was afraid of Emily’s effect on her, and slept with boys to try to get rid of her feelings for Emily.
Season 3 was mainly about Naomi dealing with her feelings for Emily and questioning her sexuality. Up until episode 4, Naomi maintained that she was straight and did not have feelings for Emily, despite knowing Emily was in love with her. At first, despite heavy flirtation, she only allowed herself to kiss Emily under the supposed influence of drugs. However, in her featured episode 6, she gave into her desire and they shared their first sexual experience. By the end of the series, they confessed their feeling and both come out publicly as a couple.
Much of season 4 dealt with Emily and Naomi having problems with their relationship, due to Naomi cheating on Emily and also disagreeing about their future plans after graduating college. By the final episode of the series, “Everyone”, their relationship was still on the rocks, but Naomi finally revealed her true feelings: that she had always loved Emily and that she was done running, presenting her with two tickets to travel after graduation, and she and Emily finally kiss and reunite.
When the characters were brought back for a short season 7, Naomi’s character had changed significantly. Her trademark blonde hair was now brunette and she had also lost her idealistic, political personality. Instead, she had become an unambitious, unmotivated slacker who spent her days smoking cannabis and drinking with her friends.
Though her relationship with Emily was ongoing, they were residing in different countries and it appeared strained. When Naomi was suddenly diagnosed with cancer, she insisted that her roommate Effy not tell her girlfriend about her disease, preferring not to burden her with how quiet and frail she had become. In the end, Emily only found out about her terminal diagnosis and rushed to her side when Effy went against Naomi’s wishes and let it slip right before her death.
