On supernatural drama The Vampire Diaries, Mary Louise and Nora were recurring characters during Season 7, and members of the Heretics, a group of vampire/witch hybrids. They were together for decades, staying together through persecution and having to hide their relationship until they were able to be open about their love for each other. They were portrayed as slightly sadistic, torturing and killing their victims together, but protective of each other and those in their Heretic family.

In the 7×08 Mary Louise asked Nora to become her wife, to which Nora happily agreed. Their happiness was brief, however, as they broke up later in the same episode after being on different sides in a Heretic family feud. They got back together again in 7×14, and they decided to start over, and got engaged again.

Their happiness was short-lived once again as they were both captured by The Armory, an organization experimenting on supernatural beings, right after they celebrated their engagement with a kiss. In their next appearance on the show it was revealed that they had been held prisoners, and endured experimentation, for three years. They managed to escape, but as Mary Louise had been poisoned and was dying, Nora decided she didn’t want to live without her and the two of them sacrificed themselves, to stop the organization, and died in a car explosion caused by them using up all of their magic.

Following the two deaths, Julie Plec released a statement that she and the writers were unfamiliar with the “dead lesbian trope”.
