Liz Cruz (Roma Maffia)

Liz Cruz was the head anesthesiologist for McNamara/Troy and an out lesbian. In season 1 Liz bonds with a pre-op transwoman Sofia Lopez. However, Liz decided not to take their relationship further after Sofia fell in love with her. In season 2 Liz decided she wanted to have a baby before she got too old. Christian Troy offered to be the sperm donor, and Liz accepted and became pregnant. However, after finding out the baby would have severe birth defects she had an abortion.

Season 4

In season 4 Liz had a short relationship with Poppy who convinced Liz that she needed to have plastic surgery to enhance her appearance and become her “best self”. Liz reluctantly agreed but later broke things off with Poppy after she tried to make her have additional procedures. Later in season 4, Liz had a one-night stand and wound up drugged and missing a kidney the next morning. She also shared a kiss with Olivia Lord at the start of the season 5 but the relationship didn’t go anywhere as Oliva was already dating main character Julia.

Season 5

The season 5 DVD features a deleted scene from the episode Duke Collins, where Liz and Olivia are seen sleeping together. Presumably this is not to be considered canon.

Season 5 also brought a very controversial storyline where Liz had sex with Christian Troy, and later ended up marrying him. After Christian was diagnosed with breast cancer Liz started taking care of him. The two shared a bed and ended up having sex while half-asleep. Liz started questioning her sexuality at first, but after a sleeping with another man she realized that it was only Christian that she was attracted to. Christian later proposed to her and during the proposal Liz stated she identified as a lesbian but Christian was an “exception”. The two got married and broke-up again once Christian went into remission.

Season 6

In the final season Cruz had a date with a female medical sales representative, but was turned off by sex with her. Christian Troy talked her into staying with the woman who rejected her in favor of staying with her husband and not have a “gay life”. Liz ended up pregnant by artificial insemination.
