Katherine Rance, The Exorcist
Katherine Rance (Brianne Howey)
At the start of season 1 it slowly became clear that Katherine was depressed because her ‘friend’ had passed away. In episode 3 a flashback showed Katherine driving home with her girlfriend, Julia, from a party, talking about what they each liked about the other. They crashed into a lamppost, and Julia died as a result of the crash. They had a memorial for Julia in the same episode, where her possessed sister outed Katherine. In episode 8 a demon taunted that Katherine being gay caused the accident in which Julia died.
Julia had less than a minute of screen time in the show and existed only to establish Katherine as a lesbian and explain her depression. Katherine was often shown watching ballet videos, reminding the audience of the loss of both her partner and her ability to dance.
