Jadzia Dax (Terry Farrell)

Jadzia Dax was a Starfleet science officer who served on space station Deep Space 9 under the command of Captain Benjamin Sisko. She was initially pursued by Dr. Julian Bashir aboard the station. The Ferengi bar owner, Quark, also had a special affection for her, and the show occasionally referenced an unseen former lover, Captain Boday.

In episode 4×06, Jadzia faced ostracism from Trill culture when she briefly considered a relationship with Lenara Kahn, a Trill scientist from the Trill Science Ministry. The previous hosts of both their symbionts had been married, and when Kahn visited Deep Space 9 to conduct experiments on the wormhole she and Jadzia became close. The kiss between the two was one of the first lesbian kisses on US TV.

Jadzia and Lenara were violating the Trill taboo against re-association. Knowing that allowing their relationship to continue would mean being expelled from Trill society, and that their symbionts would die with them, Lenara broke off the relationship. Because of the nature of the episode, and because Jadzia’s possible attraction to women was never referenced again, it is hard to determine her sexuality.

Later on, Dax and Lt. Commander Worf, a Klingon, connected over their mutual love of Klingon traditions, including Opera and martial arts. Their intimate relationship began in episode 5×03, and in episode 6×07, they were married and Jadzia Dax formally joined the House of Martok. Their attempts at parenthood (despite the difficulties faced by biological incompatibilities between Klingons and Trills) were cut short when Jadzia Dax was murdered.
