Fiona Coyne, Degrassi: The Next Generation

Fiona Coyne (Annie Clark)

Fiona was a graduate and valedictorian of the Degrassi Community School’s Class of 2013, introduced in Season 9 along with her twin brother Declan.

She briefly dated male character Riley (who was closeted/in denial about being gay) even though she had suspicions about his sexual orientation. Throughout Seasons 9 and 10, most of Fiona’s storyline revolves around her jealous obsession with her brother, and in the Season 9 finale, a jealous Fiona eventually got drunk and kissed him at a party. By Season 10, she got involved with male character, Bobby, who was violent/abusive, and also cheated on her.

Fiona started therapy to deal with the fallout from her relationship with Bobby, and was prescribed anxiety pills that she ignored and started drinking heavily instead. Later, she got briefly involved with the FTM character Adam Torres, until he helped with an intervention and Fiona went to rehab for her alcoholism.

Season 10

At the end of Season 10, Fiona, then 28 days sober, attempted to reconcile with Adam. They made out, with Fiona saying he was the “best of both worlds,” because he was “boyish and girlish.” Adam became angry because he didn’t want to be reminded of his female body parts, and realizing Fiona was a lesbian and was only using him. Later, Fiona confessed to her mother that she had feelings for best friend, Holly, and that they were stronger than any she had felt for boys. The day after, Fiona came out to Holly but ended up hiding her romantic feelings from her.

Seasons 11-12

In Season 11, Fiona met life drawing model Charlie and developed a crush on her. The two started a relationship and when Charlie was left unable to pay rent, she moved in with Fiona. Charlie, who didn’t know about Fiona’s past alcoholism, surprised her with a homemade dinner and champagne which led to an anxious Fiona calling her mother and her therapist. As a result, Fiona broke up with Charlie and moved back in with her mother.

When Fiona later ran into Charlie and they decided to go to prom together. However, when Charlie later introduced Fiona to her girlfriend, Meredith, Fiona was shocked and disappointed, leading to a relapse and she started drinking again. The following episode, Fiona cancelled their prom plans and went back to rehab and Charlie left the show.

Later, Fiona befriended Imogen and the two got close. Fiona, who had a crush on Imogen, tried to confront her about her feelings for the male character, Eli, and set the two up on a date. Imogen dated Eli again but the two broke up over Eli’s jealousy and manic/violent episodes. In the Season 11 finale, Imogen and Fiona went to a carnival together and ended up kissing. They dated throughout Season 12, but broke up in the finale after graduation, due to Fiona moving to Italy.
