Carol Rance, Episodes
Carol Rance (Kathleen Rose Perkins)
On the British-American comedy series Episodes, network executive Carol Rance had been conducting a secret affair with her married boss, Merc, for over five years but their relationship seemed to be asymmetrical; she loved him more than he loved her. She was shown to be much more competent than her boss, but her loyalty to Merc prevented her from taking his job when he was fired in the Season 2 finale.
In Season 3, she slept with her new boss, Castor Sotto, who was emotionally unstable. After Castor is fired for his mad antics at the beginning Season 4, the network was looking for a new president. Carol was clearly the best choice, but she was passed over once again in order to bring in a Helen Basch, a respected TV executive. Discovering this, Carol was sure she was going to be fired due to the fact that when she was younger, she had slept with her boss, Helen’s then-husband. Turns out, Helen didn’t know about the affair until Carol outed herself in a nervous confession. To Carol’s relief, Helen didn’t care about the affair at all, and Carol soon realized that she and Helen shared the same programming sensibilities. At the end of a rare good day, Helen and Carol unwound by sparking up a joint in Helen’s office and got to know each other a little better.
Carol asked Helen if she was seeing anyone and Helen casually revealed that she just broke up with a female news anchor. She told Carol her type is “beautiful, smart, slightly damaged. Know anyone like that?” As their relationship progressed, Helen became increasingly jealous, forcing Carol to hide her close friendship with the female writer Beverly.
At the end of Season 4, Carol ran into Castor, who offered her a job as his second-in-command at The CW. Fulfilled by both her personal and professional relationships with Helen, Carol initially turned him down; following a disastrous breakup caused by Helen’s absurd certainty that Carol was sleeping with someone else (Beverly), she called Castor and took him up on his offer. His offer turned out to be fake, leaving Carol out of a job.
