On family drama The Fosters, Carmen was living at Girls United, a group home for troubled teens where main character Callie went to live for a little while in season 1. Carmen was placed in Girls United because she was in gangs and involved with drugs.
After the first season ABC created a webisode series that they uploaded to their webpage and YouTube channel, which consisted of a five part 3-5 minute episodes, following the girls in the group home. Carmen revealed that she was a lesbian in the second webisode, she had been keeping it a secret in order to avoid bullying from the other girls.
In season 3 Carmen was accepted into the army. A new girl, Brooke, then hit Carmen, leaving her with a black eye and bloody nose. Carmen lied and told the police their group counselor Rita did it because she had stolen Brooke’s drugs and would be kicked out of the army if it was revealed.
