Callie Torres, Grey’s Anatomy

Callie Torres (Sara Ramírez): On long-running medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, Dr. Callie Torres was introduced in season two as a senior orthopedic resident and love interest for intern George O’Malley. They eventually married and their relationship lasted through the early part of Season 4.

After Callie and George divorced, she started a friends-with-benefits relationship with plastic surgeon Mark Sloan. During this relationship, Callie also started becoming close with another doctor at the hospital, Erica Hahn. Callie began using Mark more frequently for sex to convince herself she wasn’t attracted to the other woman, but he eventually let her go and told her to go after Erica. Callie and Erica shared their first kiss in the fourth season, when both were main cast characters (4×15). The first time they had sex, Callie didn’t enjoy it, and when she voiced her concerns to Mark she also asked him to “teach her” his technique, because she wanted to be “good at this”. Shortly after, Callie and Erica slept together again, and started dating (5×05) until Erica was abruptly written off the show in the middle of the fifth season (5×07).

Callie then started an on-and-off relationship with pediatric surgeon Arizona Robbins, introduced as a guest character in Season 5 before joining the main cast in Season 6. Despite her ongoing relationship with Arizona, Callie had sex with Mark while she and Arizona were “on a break,” and became pregnant with his baby. Callie and Arizona eventually got back together, agreed to raise the baby together (with Mark’s help, until Mark died), and got married. After losing her leg in a plane crash, Arizona cheated on Callie in Season 9, and their marriage was strained. They tried couples therapy and separation, but Callie discovered that she was happier without Arizona and they finally divorced.

In Season 12, Callie began dating another doctor, Penny, and expressed her desire to move to New York with Penny and take her and Arizona’s daughter, Sofia, with her. This lead to a tense custody battle in which Callie eventually lost custody of her daughter to Arizona and Penny moved to New York without her. After Arizona decided that both Sofia’s mothers deserved to be happy, Arizona presented Callie with plane tickets and offered a shared custody agreement which would allow Callie to move to New York to be with Penny. Much to the surprise of cast members and fans, actress Sara Ramirez left the show at the end of this season and this was Callie’s last scene on the show. Though Ramirez has no current plans to return to the series, show creator Shonda Rhimes has said the door would always be left open for her return.
