Adriana Mendez, The Bridge
Adriana Mendez (Emily Rios)
The Bridge is a crime-drama centered around a serial killer committing murders on both sides of the Mexican and US borders. Adriana Mendez was a young reporter covering the investigation together with her coworker and friend Daniel Frye. In 1×03, Adriana’a mother asked her if Frye was her boyfriend and later on, Frye asked her why she hadn’t ended up like her sisters: pregnant and poor. Adriana admitted that staying away from boys helped, and revealed that she was a lesbian.
In 1×08 Adriana was invited to a fundraiser gala she was assigned to cover for her newspaper. While getting ready, her mother told her she prayed every night that she would find a boyfriend. During the gala, a man made a pass at her but she swiftly turned him down. Leading up to the season finale Adriana’s conflict with her mother’s desire to see her married to a man escalated, and her mother suggested she talk to a priest about her problem. Adriana angrily declared she was not getting married to anyone and that she dated women. Her mother slapped her and threw her out of the house.
In the first scene of Season 2 Adriana was sitting in a café with another woman (Lucy), holding hands and talking about her younger sister who had gone missing. For most of the season Adriana continued the investigation into the missing girls, getting caught up in cartel money laundering as well as some animosity between the CIA and the DEA.
Her relationship with Lucy was brought up again in episode 7 when they were snuggling in bed before Adriana had to leave for work. When Adriana arrived home later that day she found a dead man in her living room and an unconscious Lucy, who had been stabbed.
The next episode revealed that Lucy had survived, but Adriana had been kicked out of her hospital room by Lucy’s parents. The man who stabbed Lucy was a hitman, and Adriana had been the real target. In episode 11 Adriana showed up to pick Lucy up from the hospital but broke up with her, to not put her in further danger. Lucy asked her to pick her over her job but Adriana couldn’t do that. In the season finale Adriana revealed she had tried to kill herself two years prior, but stated that she was happier. The Bridge was cancelled after the second season.
Leading up to Season 2 out actress Emily Rios talked to AfterEllen.com about her character and her sexuality: “The first season I felt was too much of a coming out story, like the mom slapping her,” Emily said. “Yeah, we get it — but the show’s not about that. It doesn’t need to be that. I want it to be an incidental thing, which is what happens in our everyday life. Diane [Kruger] happens to have Aspberger on the show. It’s incidental; you don’t ever have to talk about it. So I wanted to make sure the whole lesbian aspect wasn’t this whole coming out story and the character wasn’t going to be made more flamboyant in any sort of way. If they ever did introduce a girlfriend, I didn’t want it to be, ‘Oh my god! Here she is!'”
